The Mobile Monday Nigeria #momohackathon – As It Happened

Lagos 24th June, 2013:  After several weeks of planning with VConnect Global Services (Operators of VConnect.com), the Mobile Monday Nigeria #momohackathon went underway at the E-Learning Centre, Odunlami Street, CMS, Lagos (which is the new home of Mobile Monday Nigeria’s events) on the 24th of June, 2013 with Developers, Designers, members of the press, staff of both Mobile Monday Nigeria and VConnect present to witness the event as it happened.

The theme of the event was “Entertainment Now” and the aim was to develop a Movie Listing Mobile Web Application using ASP .NET or PHP as the programming environment and Microsoft SQL as the database application.

As early as 8am, some members of Mobile Monday Nigeria team were already at the venue to welcome the participants (both developers and designers) as they made their way to their various teams to compete for the prizes available. A total prize of $3500 was up for grabs. At exactly 10am, the hackathon competition began proper.

The Teams

The Team names were chosen to correspond with some of the best movies of 2010. This was done so that the team names would relate to the year when VConnect was founded and the theme of the event which was “Entertainment Now”. There were 9 teams in contention for the different prizes. These are:

  1. Team 2 (Team “Shutter Island)

  2. Team 3 (Team “Scott Pilgrim”)

  3. Team 4 (Team “IP Man 2”)

  4. Team 5 (Team “Despicable Me”)

  5. Team 6 (Team “The Ghost Writer”)

  6. Team 7 (Team “How to Train Your Dragon”)

  7. Team 8 (Team “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1”)

  8. Team 9 (Team “Tangled”)

  9. Team 10 (Team “The Town”)

Throughout the coding session (10:00am to 5:00pm), all the participants were treated to soft music from various Nigerian and International musicians courtesy of Oladipo Olasemo (our Developer Ecosystem Manager) who picked songs from his Music library. He was also there to help developers when they ran into Issues. All thanks to Swift Networks who provided the internet access for the day.

Judges and Presentation

The panel of Judges include people from different industries and these are:

  1. Tomi Davies (CEO, Technovision Communications Limited and Chairman, Mobile Monday Nigeria)

  2. Oladipo Olasemo (Founder, Synkron Solutions Limited and Manager, Developer Relations, Mobile Monday Nigeria)

  3. Gbenga Sesan (Paradigm Initiative Nigeria)

  4. Bankole Oluwafemi (TechCabal)

  5. Shina Badaru (Technology Times)

  6. Deepankar Rustagi (Managing Director, VConnect)

  7. Rishi Rautela (VConnect)

Every team had 10 Minutes each to present their work and also answer questions from the judges. After care deliberation among the judges, the winners were announced with the members of press (Silverbird Television & Channels Television) around to record every moment.

The Winners were:

1st Prize: Team 4 (Team “IP Man 2”) were awarded the first place prize. A development contract of $2,000 was awarded to them by VConnect Global Services as a reward for their hard work and the team was presented with a life-size version of the prize money cheque.

2nd Prize: Team 5 (Team “Despicable Me”) were awarded the second place prize. A development contract of $1,000 was awarded to them by VConnect Global Services as a reward for their hard work and the team was presented with a life-size version of the prize money cheque.

3rd Prize: Team 9 (Team “Tangled”) were awarded the second place prize. A development contract of $500 was awarded to them by VConnect Global Services as a reward for their hard work and the team was presented with a life-size version of the prize money cheque.

Best Functionality Prize: Team 3 (Team “Scott Pilgrim”) were awarded the “Best Functionality Prize” which earned each member of the team 1 Year free Internet service courtesy of Visafone.

After the awards ceremony, all the members of the winning teams got together to take pictures with members of the press and to network with other attendees. Interviews were also done with the Judges and Winners by the Television crews present at the event.
