Let’s Talk FinTech – Event Report

The event started with a brief introduction by Tola Adeola and Mayowa Owolabi. This was quickly followed by presentations from Yinka Adewale (Kudi.ai), Wale Hassan (Flutterwave) and Ade Shonubi (NIBSS).

The panelist sessions followed soon after each of the speakers answered questions from the audience during the Q&A Sessions.

The first panelist session was titled “Opportunities for FinTech in Nigeria” and was comprised of the following panelists

  • Ade Shonubi, Managing Director, NIBSS
  • Tunde Ogungbade, Managing Director, Global Accelerex.
  • Sola Fonawopo, Convener, FinTech1000+
  • Tosin Eniolorunda, CEO, Streampay

The second panelist session was titled “Challenges facing FinTech in Nigeria” and was comprised of the following panelists

  • Ope Adeoye, Interswitch Digital.

The audience included people from companies such as NIBSS, Piggybank, First Bank, Sterling Bank, 9Mobile etc.

Special guests at the event included Aniedi Udo-Obong, John Kimani, Andy Volk (Developer Relations Team, Sub Saharan Africa at Google), Jason Titus (Head of Developer Platforms Group at Google) and David McLaughlin (Director of Ecosystem Programs (Global) at Google).

The event ended with Mr Biyi Mabadeje giving a vote of thanks.

Nokia launches its Open Innovation Challenge for 2015 focusing on the IoT ecosystem

The Nokia Open Innovation Challenge 2015 is a call for innovative ideas, technologies, or business models, and an opportunity to collaborate with Nokia to advance innovations within the IoT domain. Through this challenge, ideas will be assessed and the winners get a chance to leverage Nokia’s global market reach and connectivity expertise. Others may be selected by Nokia Growth Partners (NGP), Nokia’s investment arm and co-sponsor of the challenge, which is actively investing in promising IoT companies.

Hossein Moiin, Executive Vice President and CTO for Nokia Networks, said: “Building networks for the programmable world requires a P-O-P approach; turning networks into Platforms, Orchestrating the ecosystem, and creating the required Partnerships. Today, the pace of innovation matters more and more in our daily lives and, at Nokia, we are showing our openness to incorporating innovations from all around us by launching our third annual Open Innovation Challenge. Submissions started on the 3rd of August 2015, and end on the 20th of September 2015. Startup companies – whether large or small – as well as teams, individuals, businesses and academia are invited to join the challenge and submit their working prototype.

NIBSS to host Developers, Merchants and other Payment Industry Players at the NIBSS Developer Hangout

The ‘’Developers’ Hangout’’ is a one day Developers Forum aimed at promoting collaboration and innovation to accelerate the growth of the Nigerian Financial Space. In addition, it is also aimed at showcasing the opportunities available to Developers by integrating their apps into NIBSS Payments Platform.

As more money goes digital, there is a race to control the flow across billions of online channels such as web, point-of-sale locations and smartphones etc. NIBSS believes that collaborative effort between Application Developers, Payment Service Providers and Merchants is a key driver in determining the thrust this flow will go in Nigeria, thus, the Developers’ Hangout. They also believe that eCommerce and ePayment is the next new wave taking over from agriculture and oil.

The Hangout will hold in Lagos, Nigeria on the 18th of September 2015 and Participants will be required to register on the NIBSS website (www.nibss-plc.com.ng/devcon). Registration opened on Saturday 1st August, 2015 and closes on Monday 31st August 2015. Due to the limitation of space and the sensitivity of the information that will be shared at the event each participant will have to be verified using their BVN. Access codes and further details of the event will be sent to only verified participants.

You are invited to the Intel Developer Day in Lagos!

Intel is putting together a Developer Day in Lagos. The event aims to help developers understand Intel’s technology and solutions, and how these can help developers get better at their craft. Also Developers will be able to give suggestions and feedback on how Intel can interact with the ecosystem better.

There will also be a live-coding session using the Intel XDK (The XDK can be obtained at this link). The Intel XDK is available for Windows, Mac , and Linux (32bit and 64bit). Make sure to download this if you’re planning to attend!
