Let’s Talk FinTech – Event Report

The event started with a brief introduction by Tola Adeola and Mayowa Owolabi. This was quickly followed by presentations from Yinka Adewale (Kudi.ai), Wale Hassan (Flutterwave) and Ade Shonubi (NIBSS).

The panelist sessions followed soon after each of the speakers answered questions from the audience during the Q&A Sessions.

The first panelist session was titled “Opportunities for FinTech in Nigeria” and was comprised of the following panelists

  • Ade Shonubi, Managing Director, NIBSS
  • Tunde Ogungbade, Managing Director, Global Accelerex.
  • Sola Fonawopo, Convener, FinTech1000+
  • Tosin Eniolorunda, CEO, Streampay

The second panelist session was titled “Challenges facing FinTech in Nigeria” and was comprised of the following panelists

  • Chijioke Dozie, Co-founder / CEO, OneFi.
  • Ope Adeoye, Interswitch Digital.
  • Emeka Okoye, CEO, Vikanti.

The audience included people from companies such as NIBSS, Piggybank, First Bank, Sterling Bank, 9Mobile etc.

Special guests at the event included Aniedi Udo-Obong, John Kimani, Andy Volk (Developer Relations Team, Sub Saharan Africa at Google), Jason Titus (Head of Developer Platforms Group at Google) and David McLaughlin (Director of Ecosystem Programs (Global) at Google).

The event ended with Mr Biyi Mabadeje giving a vote of thanks.

Nokia X Portathon Event Recap – 27th and 28th March 2014 – #Port2NokiaX

Android Developers gathered together at the Nokia X Portathon to get hands-on training on how to port their Android Apps to the Nokia X Platform. It was a two day event held at iDEA Hub on the 27th of March 2014 and at ccHub on the 28th of March 2014. This event was sponsored by Nokia.

Online Payments in Nigeria – RECAP – November 25th MobileMonday Nigeria event

The Day kicked off with attendees turning up around 4:30pm for check-in and registration and at 5:00pm, the event got off to a flying start with pre-event networking between the attendees. The pre-event networking helped create some conversation about the theme of the day which was “Online Payments in Nigeria”. The speakers for the day were Oladipo Olasemo (Mobile Monday Nigeria & Synkron Solutions Limited), Andrew Faluyi (Volunteer at Mobile Monday Nigeria & Student of Insurance at University of Lagos) and Tim Akinbo (TimbaObjects Technologies Limited).

The first presentation was made by Oladipo Olasemo and it focused on “Web Versus Mobile Payments in Nigeria”. The data presented  aimed at showing a comparison between “Web Payments” and “Mobile Payments” with the latter specifically meaning “MobileMoney Payments”

The Story of Mobile Money so far (2012 – date): Subscribers – 9.9m, Total agents – 67,494, Total Volume of transactions – 11m, Total Value of Transactions – 105bn (Transaction values denoted in Nigerian Naira)

He spoke about the value chain within the Mobile Money ecosystem, services that can be provided using MobileMoney, regulatory framework, The various MobileMoney models and the challenges.

The Challenges hampering nationwide MobileMoney deployment: Inadequate capital, Infrastructural Challenges, Lack of awareness, lack of a wide-spread agent network, Interoperability between various MobileMoney operators

Recap: Economic Impact of the Internet in Nigeria – September 30th

This report was made possible by Oge Onuoha, Willie Aniebiet and the rest of the Online Team here at Mobile Monday Nigeria.

On September 30th, 2013, we had our September 2013 meet up, which doubled as one of the events slated for the Google Entrepreneurship week, an annual week celebrating innovators and entrepreneurs around the world (September 30th to October 4th, 2013). The event was themed “Economic Impact of the Internet in Nigeria” and it covered a broad range of topics including the ICT Sector in Nigeria, the market structure in Nigeria and the Impact of the Internet on the Nigerian Economy. It was a night to remember as delegates and invited guests from Konga.com and a host of other companies were in attendance to listen to the facilitators of the report and to also ask from questions from the Panelists who were invited to share their thoughts on the report and their personal views about the Economic Impact of the Internet in Nigeria.

The panel included Simdul Shagaya of Konga.com, Femi Akinde of Slimtrader, Deji Adewunmi of Jobberman, Deepankar Rustagi of VConnect.com, Femi Taiwo of INITS Limited and Google Developer Group Lagos, Mike Ogbalo of FirstBank, Akin Oyebode of  Stanbic IBTC, Olalekan Olude of Jobberman, Robin Miller of Dalberg, Yinka David West of Lagos Business School, and Jason Njoku of Iroko Partners.

The networking session commenced by 5:00pm as guests streamed in to the e-Learning Centre and the IDEA Hub. Early birds had more time to network while munching some small chops. The house was a full one as we saw MoMo Nigeria members from neighbouring cities like Ibadan and Ife show up for the event.

By 6:30pm Mayowa Owolabi kicked off the event by introducing the special guests and inviting Dalberg’s Robin Miller, for her presentation on the Economic Impact of the Internet in Nigeria. Attendees at the IDEA Hub watched the event live via Google+. Etisalat provided internet service for the Live Hangout.

Her three-tier presentation shed light on the good, the bad and the unfulfilled potential of the impact of the internet in Nigeria.

The good: She highlighted the Increasing access to affordable infrastructure; Infrastructure investments; Connections across the continent via the social media; Innovation; socio-economic impact (access to education, job opportunities and financial services) and Public, private and philanthropic investments.

The bad: She pointed out the challenges holding back growth to be Access to the internet, Innovation policies by the government and the bad reputation of ICT in Nigeria with regards to Cyber Crime and Corruption of executives.

The unfulfilled potential: Dalberg’s Robin Miller recommended continuous investment in  infrastructure and proper innovation policies, to unlock the unfulfilled potential  of the internet in Nigeria.

After the insightful presentation by Robin Miller, The MoMo Nigeria executive chairman, Tomi Davies introduced the panelists, questions and comments from the audience were discussed and answered by them.

The evening was concluded by the Chairman enlightening the audience of the iHq project, an industry led initiative that aims to accelerate the growth of technology innovation and entrepreneurship for economic prosperity in Nigeria and the e-Learning Centre, an ultra modern resource centre for knowledge seekers.

mHealth in Nigeria: August 2013 Event Recap

After bustling for the last Monday of the month of August, health experts, developers and enthusiasts hung out at Lagos State e-Learning Centre for the August Edition of Mobile Monday. Representatives from the World Bank were exceptionally punctual. The event slated for 5:00pm saw just a few attendees available at the set time; the ‘African-time’ bug. A well known figure in the Tech-Space in Nigeria, Tomi Davies, welcomed participants and painstakingly registered each unregistered participant in his “database”.

July 2013 MoMoNigeria Event – Location Based Services and Its Benefits to Nigerian Businesses (RECAP)

At the event, Location Based Services and its benefits to Nigerian Businesses was discussed. The speakers were Gabriel Dada of Twinpine, Aniedi Udo-Obong of Audax and Jacqueline Raquai of Google.

The First speaker, Gabriel Dada Spoke about Location Based Advertising and how Twinpine’s ad serving platform works. He also gave some statistics about Online Advertising:
– 78% of Nigeria’s internet users are between the ages of 19-35.
– There are at least 9 Million Nigerians on Social Media
– There were more website visits from Mobile (60.69% of traffic) than Desktop (30.31% of traffic)

MoMoHackathon Event Report – PDF

It aimed at bringing together Developers and Designers to work together in teams and collaborate on bulding a solution that was to showcase movie listings from Cinemas all over Nigeria. The Mobile Monday Nigeria #momohackathon – As It Happened

Lagos 24th June, 2013:  After several weeks of planning with VConnect Global Services (Operators of VConnect.com), the Mobile Monday Nigeria #momohackathon went underway at the E-Learning Centre, Odunlami Street, CMS, Lagos (which is the new home of Mobile Monday Nigeria’s events) on the 24th of June, 2013 with Developers, Designers, members of the press, staff of both Mobile Monday Nigeria and VConnect present to witness the event as it happened.

The theme of the event was “Entertainment Now” and the aim was to develop a Movie Listing Mobile Web Application using ASP .NET or PHP as the programming environment and Microsoft SQL as the database application.

The May 2013 Mobile Monday Nigeria Event [Recap]

The May 2013 Edition of  Mobile Monday Nigeria focused on Big Data and its benefits to Nigerian Businesses. It was also the first time we used our new venue. Yes, we are now at the E-Learning Centre, Odunlami Street, Lagos Island. It was an insightful event that helped to showcase the benefits of Big Data to attendees.

First up was OpenApps. OpenApps ( http://www.openapps.com.ng ) aims to become a key source of analytics data for website owners. According to its website OpenApps is a market intelligence system that aggregates Internet users behavior from multiple high traffic sources to support the development of intuitive digital services in Nigeria. This behavioral data allows designers, website owners to know what platforms are being utilized the most and also what medium is being used to access the websites that are members of OpenApps.

Recap of the April 2013 Mobile Monday Nigeria Event with Qualcomm

It was a night of discovery for Mobile Developers in Nigeria at the April 2013 Mobile Monday Event. More than 100 Developers gathered to hear what Qualcomm had to offer to the ecosystem. The event held on the 7th Floor of the prestigious Avenue Suites at Victoria Island located at 1390 Tiamiyu Savage Street. There were Demo stands displaying Augmented Reality demos from American Apparel, BandAid, and others with people on standby to display how the demos worked. There were also some developers from Qualcomm in the house to explain how Vuforia works from a developer standpoint.
